A completely continuous layer of clay finds itself awaking for the first time on a breezy and awesome fall morning. It is just under 200 pounds in weight, has a bright orange color, and was moderately saturated with water at the time of its waking. It cannot see the red of the soil surrounding it, nor smell the petrichor-y musk of the air, nor can it taste the rotten leaf matter that lies in a thick layer on top of it. Instead, it begins to understand the world through non-chemical sensations: temperature, vibrations, and physical touch.
It emerges, crawling, twisting, sliding out of the earth and becomes fully immersed in the air. The breeze distorts its senses a bit, but it can still sense the foliage and natural debris of the wooded area. Instinctually, it emits a low, droning sound.. which then rises to a high pitched beeping that bounces off of the surrounding area. The environment is much clearer now, and it curiously begins to explore. What "instincts" command this non-biological lifeform? It posesses no neurons, no hormones, no nerves to tell it how to act or what to feel. Whatever; this magical soul was just born a few minutes ago, it doesn't really matter what forces animate it, or what processes instruct its body. All that honestly matters is: what does it want to do in this new, amazing situation, in the vast state of West Virginia?
